The Transitional-Aged Youth (TAY) Program at Theo Lacy Facility in Orange County was launched in August 2021 in collaboration with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, local service providers in Orange County, Orange County Superior Court, and the University of California, Irvine. This new program is designed for young men ages 18-25 who are interested in reentry services tailored to their age group. The goals of the program are to promote emotional well-being, prevent future criminal behavior, and to give youth tools to be successful when released from jail.
The Road to Reentry study, conducted by Dr. Elizabeth Cauffman and her research team was designed to evaluate the TAY program and will provide insight into how to improve conditions within jails for both staff and young incarcerated persons. To the extent that creating age-segregated pods fosters more positive adjustment and fewer deviant behaviors, the safety and well-being of staff and incarcerated persons are both served.
